I’ve been allowed to do a lot of interesting things in games, but none have ever allowed me to exchange onions for incredible powers. I’m proud to say that I’ve now been able to do that, all thanks to Onion Force – the tower defense/action adventure hybrid from Queen Bee Games. You can see the game in action below:

As you can tell from the trailer, Onion Force isn’t just about setting up defenses. The game allows you to get down and dirty on the battlefield, taking out as many monsters as you can all whilst protecting your King from evil enemy forces. I’ve spent some time playing the game and I really enjoyed it – even if I did keep dying. All the time. Seriously, Onion Force is not an easy game, but it’ll hook you in and keep you coming back for more.

We recently got a chance to speak to Onion Force developer Steven Cassidy about the upcoming tower defense title and the hardcore adventure it will offer gamers – check it out below:

Use A Potion:
Firstly, how would you describe Onion Force in your own words?

Steven:
Action adventure with a tower defense twist. It’s got a cartoony asthetic, but don’t be fooled, this game will kick your ass.

Use A Potion:
Tower defense games are really popular with gamers these days, but there’s a ton out there. What sort of features does Onion Force have to make it stand out from the rest?

Steven:
Onion Force
is only a tower defense game as much as the player wants it to be. The player is free to focus on the tower defense aspect as much as they want, or focus on the action adventure aspect as much as they want. It’s up to each individual to come up with their own unique playstyle to pave the path to victory. They need to test the waters, find out what works for them.

Onion Force features three unique characters that you can use to lead your defenses against the wave upon wave of enemies. Can you give us some details about each character and what exactly makes them unique?

Steven:
The different characters fall into their classes traditionally. The warrior has a high hp and attack, high defense, but no ranged attack. The bowman has medium hp, medium defense and attack, but also shoots a quick range attack. The wizard has low hp and defense, but an extremely powerful ranged attack. Each of the characters offers a unique playstyle, and each have specific towers that work well with them, it’s up to the player to figure it all out.

What sort of enemies will we be facing in Onion Force and what sort of weaponry will we be using to take them down?

Steven:
The enemies range from non threatening, and almost cute, to very intimidating. This was inspired by the Dragon Quest series. We always loved the progress of the enemies in that game and decided to infuse inspiration from it.
The weapons are randomly generated, so you wont know what you will be using until you get the weapon. There is a nice variety, and every so often you will come across a weapon that is enchanted with a special ability, the player will know this because the weapon is displayed in a blue font rather than the usual white. Maybe the weapon will grant a boost to defense, or maybe it will shoot fireballs…

Use A Potion:
Onion Force features a fantastic looking cartoon-like visual style that really makes it stand out – the environments in particular look great. What sort of environments will we get to venture through when the game is released?

Steven:
There are six different environments total, forest, snow, desert, swampy… we tried to get a good variety.

When is Onion Force going to be released and on what platforms?

Steven:
March 2nd, available on Steam, Android, and ios.

Finally, can you tell us something about Onion Force that no-one outside of the development team knows?

Steven:
How ridiculously hard it was to produce. This was our first title, and we went to hell and back at least a dozen times, contracts, partnerships, lawyers, red tape and intellectual property problems… but that’s a whole new story.
