Few games wear their inspirations as proudly as Bye Sweet Carole, a haunting 2D adventure that looks like it was plucked straight from the golden age of Disney animation, but also drenched in something dark and tragic (and I mean that in the best possible way). It offers a fairytale-like escapade that finely balances elements of horror and whimsical fun together, inviting players into a world that feels both warm and unsettling in equal measures. It’s a gorgeous looking experience, but also one that all too often stumbles under the weight of its own design flaws.

Set in early 20th-century England, Bye Sweet Carole follows Lana, a young orphan living under cruel conditions at the eerie Bunny Hall. When her closest friend Carole suddenly disappears, Lana sets out to uncover what happened, unravelling a mystery that crosses between reality and a dream-like realm of talking animals, monsters, and long-forgotten secrets… so a classic fairytale setup, really. The tone shifts constantly between tender and sinister, and whilst it’s never outright frightening, it does perfectly balance out that sense of middle ground where children’s stories become something much darker than they seem.
The pacing of the storytelling is slow and deliberate, allowing players to soak in the melancholic atmosphere before the next strange twist, and for the most part it works well. It’s certainly suspenseful, and whilst there are some moments that linger on a little longer than they need to, it does make it easy to invest in Lana’s plight and the unsettling world she finds herself in. What helps give the story an additional emotional beat is the friendship between Lana and Carole, with their bond helping provide a sense of purpose to the narrative that really brings the characters to life.
“Bye Sweet Carole is a gorgeous and atmospherically dark fairytale that’s let down by some iffy gameplay and technical issues.“
Without a shadow of a doubt, the thing that stands out the most is how Bye Sweet Carole looks and sounds. The hand-drawn art style is simply fantastic, with every scene resembling a Disney movie from the 1950s, with the animation intentionally miming the look of classic cartoons (complete with subtle grain and flicker effects that add to the magic). It captures the vintage style so perfectly, whilst environments are layered with rich detail and clever lighting that help bring everything to life. The wonderful music score helps heighten this atmosphere beautifully, blending delicate orchestral melodies with darker, horror-infused flourishes… honestly, I can’t sing its praises enough when it comes to visual and audio design, and whilst the gameplay is far from perfect (more on that in a bit), the game is almost worth checking out for its presentation alone.
Whilst the storytelling and presentation is of a high standard, the gameplay doesn’t quite match the same level of refinement. At its core, Bye Sweet Carole is a 2D puzzle-platformer, with occasional stealth and action sequences thrown in for good measure. When it comes to the puzzling, it’s pretty good, with the game offering clever, well-paced conundrums that challenge players in the right ways.

However, whilst it has some bright moments, it’s hard to ignore the clunky mechanics and inconsistent pacing. The controls are one of the game’s biggest problems, with movement feeling imprecise and clumsy throughout, with even simple manoeuvres often requiring specific yet awkward timing. Platforming sections lack fluidity too, making chase sequences more frustrating than frightening, whilst stealth segments are similarly unreliable thanks to enemies that frequently glitch. There’s a clear disparity in the quality between these sections and the puzzling, and whilst I can appreciate the variety (there’s even a rhythm-based mini-game to be found), they have too many flaws to fully enjoy.
Technical issues appear far too often to ignore too, and I suffered from visual glitches, the audio cutting out, and even a full crash when playing. I couldn’t progress through one area of the game at one point either, which required re-loading the game to fix. Whilst these issues weren’t frequent enough for them to stand out as a massive problem, I encountered enough hitches to feel frustrated when playing – hopefully it’s something that can fixed soon with some patches.
Bye Sweet Carole Review
Bye Sweet Carole is a gorgeous and atmospherically dark fairytale that’s let down by some iffy gameplay and technical issues. Its hand-drawn animation and beautiful soundtrack are mesmerising, whilst the bond between Lana and Carole really gives the story emotional weight. I found myself wholly invested in the tale, with it striking the perfect tonal balance of being light-hearted and sinister.
Unfortunately, clunky controls, uneven pacing, and recurring technical issues hold it back from greatness, and whilst the puzzles can be clever, the action and stealth sections often feel clumsy and awkward. It’s clear that Bye Sweet Carole has a lot going for it, but it’ll need a few patches (and maybe a few refinements to the gameplay) before it will be able to reach its full potential.
