The roguelite genre has never been shy about blending ideas, but Slots & Daggers might be one of its smartest hybrids yet. By fusing the irresistible allure of slot machines with turn-based dungeon crawling, developer Friedemann has created something familiar, fresh, and innovative. It’s easy to lose hours chasing that next perfect spin, and before you know it, the sun’s gone down and you’ve been glued to the reels for five straight hours (or at least that’s how my experience with the game went).

Slots & Daggers sees you playing as an adventurer travelling across the land to defeat a corrupt king, all whilst battling through a series of dungeons, swamps, sewers, citadels and so forth along the way. The premise is as classic as they come in the fantasy genre, and it doesn’t pretend to be anything more… well… besides a few humorous quips here and there. The story is paper-thin, but in this case, that’s not a flaw… it’s just not the point. Slots & Daggers is all about the gameplay mechanics underneath, the steady loop of progress and chance that makes each run both unpredictable and exhilarating.
Each battle in the game is framed around a slot machine, where your chosen weapons, shields, and magic items populate the reels. Spinning the machine triggers attacks, defences, or coin generation depending on what lands. On the surface, it might sound like pure luck, but this is where the game’s cleverness shines through – every choice you make, whether that’s what items to include or remove from your reels, what upgrades to buy, and which permanent buffs to unlock, all affect your chances of survival.
The more items you cram into your slots, the lower your odds of rolling the exact attack or defence you need in any given spin. It’s a deceptively strategic balance: do you focus your load out to increase efficiency and ensure you’ll land on something you need, or add variety to prepare for any situation (something that can prove useful in later battles where you’re at risk of one of your items being temporarily disabled)? The constant tweaking of setups, coupled with the thrill of watching the reels line up perfectly, makes for a gameplay loop that’s so damn addictive that it’s simply impossible to walk away without having just ‘one more go’.
“Slots & Daggers is one of those rare indie games that takes a simple concept and turns it into something far more compelling than it has any right to be.”
Of course, the random nature of gameplay is both the best and worst part of the experience. Sometimes, no matter how carefully you plan, the spins simply don’t go your way, and you’ll be left spinning an unfortunate trio of coins when all you needed was a bit of shield to protect you from a killing blow. A few unlucky rolls can mean a short-lived run, especially when facing enemies that hit with powerful magic that bypass shields – something I learned the hard way after being wiped out several times in a row. There are tools to help manage this, like the ability to slow the reels or nudge them a few spaces, but fortune will always play a role in your success. At times, that unpredictability can be a little frustrating, but at others, it’s exactly what keeps you coming back for more.
And hey, there’s even an element of skill that’ll determine your success, with certain abilities requiring skill checks that’ll determine their efficiency. These moments keep Slots & Daggers engaging, and whilst your overall interactivity is somewhat limited in the game, vanquishing a particularly challenging foe with a well-timed critical hit always brought a smile to my face.
What really hooked me in was how satisfying it feels to spend the chips you earn on permanent upgrades between runs. Increasing critical hit chances, boosting health regeneration, reducing shop prices, or even giving yourself an additional pair of reels to spin all make a noticeable difference in runs, and it’s deeply rewarding to see those improvements pay off as you push further through the game. The roguelite structure encourages replaying early levels to grind for chips, but it never feels tedious thanks to just how quick and punchy each encounter is (as well as seeing yourself overcome foes that were a challenge earlier on).

That addictive rhythm – fight, spin, earn, upgrade, repeat – is the heart of Slots & Daggers, and when everything aligns and you land a perfect set of reels that wipes out an enemy in one go, it’s genuinely thrilling. It took me around four-hours or so to beat the game, but with an Arena Mode that unlocks at completion, it’s easy to find yourself coming back for more and more.
Slots & Daggers Review
Slots & Daggers is one of those rare indie games that takes a simple concept and turns it into something far more compelling than it has any right to be. The blend of chance and strategy ensures that each run feels both challenging and satisfying, and sure, the randomness of the reels can occasionally turn against you, but any frustration fades fast once you secure that hard-fought win or find yourself equipped with the perfect addition to your loadout (I’m looking at you, x2).
It’s stylish, clever, and dangerously addictive… the kind of game that makes hours disappear without you noticing (which was something I regretted after staying up until 2am playing). Whether you’re optimising your loadout for efficiency, fine-tuning your buffs, or just chasing that next perfect spin, Slots & Daggers makes every moment on the slots feel like a spin of destiny.
