If you grew up during the early 2000s, there’s a VERY high chance that your afternoons were spent on Neopets, and you know what? I was right there with you. Back in the day, I was a total Neopets aficionado – I had a healthy collection of high-value paintbrushes tucked away, and, I’ll admit with a bit of a heavy heart, I was one of those awful people who used to bait people with fake login pages to nab their accounts. I know, I know, it’s awful… but it made me rich, so… I’m over it. There’s a lot of love in my gaming history for Neopets, so of course, when I heard that the Neopets Mini Mega Games Collection was bringing that specific brand of browser-based magic to modern consoles, I was more than ready to head back to Neopia – especially with the physical release on console.

The package is essentially a digital museum of twenty-six classic Flash games from Neopets (plus one brand-new addition), all wrapped up in a light story mode to accompany your progress. On the surface, it’s a nice little idea, and seeing games like Kass Basher, Snowmuncher, Meerca Chase, and Turmac Roll on a big telly is a genuine treat. The visuals have been given a proper tune-up too, with each game looking crisp and vibrant, filling the screen properly rather than just being stretched out into a blurry mess. It really captures that specific aesthetic we all loved two decades ago, with everything holding up well thanks to its fresh lick of paint.

However, once the initial rush of nostalgia fades, the experience starts to feel a bit… well… uneven. The story mode, which sees you chatting with familiar faces during a Neopian festival, is a nice way to structure the progression, but it’s over in a flash, less than two hours even if you’re taking your time. Sure, it’s charming to see familiar faces, but if I’m being honest, it just feels a bit rushed. Die-hard Neopets fans who have fond memories of the game will probably appreciate it (it did get a few smiles out of me), but it could have been so much more.

“It’s a wonderful (albeit brief) trip down memory lane that looks great on a modern screen, but it lacks the depth across its gameplay to keep you playing long-term”

The biggest hurdle in Neopets Mini Mega Games Collection is the gameplay itself, because these games were originally designed for a mouse and keyboard, so the transition to a controller is a bit mixed. Some titles feel fantastic, but others don’t fare as well – especially if you have some muscle memory from your time playing them back in the noughties. They’re also quite easy, which means once you’ve cleared them, there isn’t much reason to go back.

On the plus side, for those who still maintain their virtual pets today (I didn’t even know Neopets still existed), the ability to link your actual Neopets account for bonuses is a stellar addition. It’s also a great game to play with kids, and the two-player modes are a brilliant way to show them what you used to obsess over when you were their age. Sure, the nostalgia won’t be there, but the simplicity of the experience makes it ideal for those youngsters who are just figuring out their way around a game controller.

Neopets Mini Mega Games Collection is a bit of a mixed bag. It’s a wonderful (albeit brief) trip down memory lane that looks great on a modern screen, but it lacks the depth across its gameplay to keep you playing long-term – even with bonuses when linking up to your own Neopets accounts. Once you’ve hit those high scores to unlock arcade mode, the incentive to keep going just sort of evaporates. Unless I get an urge for an extra dose of nostalgia here and there, I can’t see myself revisiting Neopia in Neopets Mini Mega Games Collection again.

But hey, the collection was enjoyable whilst it lasted and it certainly gave me a blast from the past that was seemingly lost within my memories. If that’s all you want out of Neopets Mini Mega Games Collection, it’s easy to recommend checking it out.
