Despite there being a celebration of all things Kingdom Hearts on Sunday to mark its 20th anniversary, I didn’t expect the reveal of Kingdom Hearts IV to be part of it. Yet we here are, excited one again to continue the adventure of Sora, Donald, and Goofy – this time in a new story arc known as the ‘Lost Master Arc’.

Check out the reveal trailer below:

We don’t have a whole lot of information about Kingdom Hearts IV yet, but do know that it’s being developed in Unreal Engine 5, so expect it to be exclusive to current gen consoles. There’s no information about potential platform exclusivity yet though, so we’ll have to wait and see if anything is going on there. It does look stunning though, whilst everything shown off is in-engine – there’s even a glimpse of gameplay, though what we’ve seen did seem a bit more automated as opposed to natural battling with enemies.

Square Enix did reveal the following about the game:

“Beginning with Sora facing off in a boss battle against a giant enemy, players are introduced to the Quadratum, a large, expansive city set in a gorgeous, realistic world unlike anything ever seen before in the Kingdom Hearts series. Fans will be excited to see the return of Sora’s well-known companions Donald and Goofy, in addition to the first appearance of Strelitzia, a mysterious new character who appears before Sora in this strange new setting.”

It looks great and I’m really interested to learn more, especially with the departure to a more realistic-looking environment (that does admittedly feel a little out of place within the Kingdom Hearts universe). There’s so much potential as far as the worlds are concerned too – will we finally see Star Wars or Marvel characters battle alongside Sora?! Only time will tell…
